As your train trundles through London suburbia, it is difficult to
imagine that you are less than 90 minutes away from the heart of
the South Downs. Hopefully, you will have picked up your coffee and
maybe even packed a picnic. Whatever you have in your rucksack,
you are in for a treat. Enjoy stunning scenery, birdlife and a beautiful
country town and castle, all so easily accessible by train from London.
River walking, hill cresting, sea views, castle views, historic buildings,
café and pub stops. What more could you possibly want from a day
out from the city?
It’s worth deciding your priorities before you step off the train. It’s
a three hour hike and there are plenty of enticing distractions along
the way. A coffee at the Motte & Bailey on Arundel High Street is
the perfect way to get the show on the road and plan the day ahead.
Alternatively, drop into the Moathouse Bakeaway & Coffee Co for a
bacon bap and picnic takeaway.
The walk takes you into Arundel Park with outstanding panoramic
views and hidden valleys. Explore the beautiful church in South Stoke
before enjoying lunch at The Black Rabbit. Savour the views over
the Arun Valley and the river walking beside the Arun itself. Johnny
Barclay’s Nature Notes, included in this guide, really does put some
colour on the page.
This is a hike that easily fits into one day and can be enjoyed at any
time of year. There’s always the opportunity to stretch out your
adventure with an overnight stay in Arundel. Make a weekend of it
and spend time wandering around Arundel Castle and its gardens
(check opening times), both world class. The tulip festival in late
spring is a sight to behold.
Make time to peruse Arundel’s shops and galleries. In addition to
the High Street, wander up Tarrant Street and explore the Old Print
Works and Ninevah Chapel. There are bookshops, antique emporia,
art galleries, a butcher, delicatessen, The Tea and Biscuit Club,
a chocolatier, hat shop and a vinyl record store.
